Namirembe Cathedral

Namirembe cathedral is Uganda’s oldest cathedral also known as St. Paul’s Cathedral built as a place of worship among the Anglicans. Uganda is known as the country which has a population with different religious beliefs some of which are international and others are local. These include; the Roman Catholics and the Protestants from the Anglican Church. Uganda is believed to be having the largest Protestant church in East Africa. The Cathedral is located on the Namirembe Hill, the “Mother of Peace”. Visitors would be surprised to know that there have been at least four versions of this church since 1890. The current version was constructed between 1915 and 1919 using earthen bricks and earthen roof tiles. Recently, it was given a major overhaul that has redeemed its presence and added luster to the dome. However, one most compelling thing about Namirembe is the organ piano.

The first church was built on Namirembe Hill in March 1890. The cathedral is visible from all directions of Kampala. Interesting is the graveyard which includes the remains of Bishop Hannington, who was murdered in 1885, and the Cooks, who established Mengo Hospital. Bishop Samuel Sekadde is the Bishop of Namirembe Diocese. Sunday Service are conducted in English is at 7.00 a.m. and Luganda Service at 10.30a.m.

The cathedral is within a walkable distance of many places of interest for the tourists like the Namirembe Guest House, established by the Church Commissioners and located on the outer slopes of Namirembe hill. The Kabaka’s Palace, Kasubi Tombs and several shopping centers are also located near the cathedral.
